HW 10 - Food, Inc. Response

The main points of the film that we watched i think were to inform people on what these big companies were doing to the food that they are eating. not only does this film show the harmful things we put in our body each day but also show as how corrupt these major companies are as a whole, from making laws to protect them self from people ban mouthing the company or to avoid laws that can harm them. these company's do not play fair and do not really care about anyone else but them self.
One major thing that the movie Food Inc had over the book "fast food nation" was you were really able to see some of the horrible things that these companies do to the animals and also to the workers. Its one thing to read about these things happening but in a movie they can really throw it in your face and you really get to see what's going on. What the book can offer though is very rich information because for a movie there's only so much information that they can put inside a movie and they tend to only put the major issues and cut out the rest. But in a book there is no limit to how much information a person can put it in so your not left with losing some information like a movie.
I feel like these company's really get away with a lot. No one really calls them out on it because there such a big company that they can afford lawyers and they also have people working in washington DC for them that its hard to fight them. The only way i see a change happening if the a lot of people like most of the country stop eating at these fast food places. In doing this you would see a big chance because they would be losing money and end up not affording people they hare in washington which will end up forcing them to comply to the rules like health guide lines and other things. I don't see this happening anytime soon though so for now companies will just keep doing what they do even though its wrong.

Chapter 10

Chapter 10

One major thing that the fast food companies were wanting to do was to expand there chains overseas to make more money. The first major company to do this was Mcdonalds. Since mcdonalds was able to do this thats what lead the way to other company's reaching out and expanding there chains overseas as well. which in the long run helped all the fast food company's because there were not longer making just money in the US but now overseas as well.

"we've got the fattest, least fit generation of kids ever" (Pg240)

Its kind of crazy the power that these fast food people have when they set a goal they really try to finish it at any cost. also they are very good at avoiding problems without getting in to trouble.

Chapter 9

Chapter 9

One of the popular foods in america the hamburger started to become deadly. what started to happen to the meat was that it was being effected by a number of things one of theses things were E. Coli o157:h7, and if a person were to eat meat which had it they could get very ill and in some cases can also lead to death.

"those who survive are often left with permanent disabilities such as blindness or brain damage" (Pg 200)

I feel that the meat companies are never out for anyones safety they just want to make the most money as possibly and by doing that they are willing to cut corners. The sad part about it is the corners they to tend to cut are the ones that get people very sick or even end up killing people.

Chapter 8

Chapter 8

In this chapter it talks about the jobs and how dangerous some are, One major dangerous job is the slaughterhouse many workers that are working in these are immigrants so the working conditions to start off with are not good but another problem that happens with being immigrant workers is that accidents that happen in the slaughterhouse gets covered up and never reported.
"the fine was $480 for each man's death" (178)
when i read this quote i could not believe that a person life would only be worth that much its sad how these big company's can get away with murder in away without worrying about it effecting anything they do, the real victims to this would be the family's of the person who died because they really wont get any justice.

HW 9 - Freakonomics Response

There were a few intellectual moves i felt that was put in to the movie Freakonomics. One of those moves that they did a lot in most of the film was when ever they would be talking about something like a good example would be about the names they would have different view points about it. One view point they had talking about how your name doe not decide your future and even if you have a different name than other people you can still do what ever you would like to do in life. The other view point of this was a name does effect your future the example to that was getting a job how a person with a normal name like george Vs someone with a name like Tyrone, George would get more call backs about the job quicker than a person named Tyrone. Another example they did was the crime. There was a time where the crime rate was very high in NYC and than a few years later the crime rate started to drop most people thought the reason to that was because there were more cops on the street and also the Mayor was cracking down on crimes as well. But they had a different view on this and they think another reason that the crime rate drop was because of abortion being more easy to get, making it so that people who didn't want kids would not have and overall having less crime because of it. I think the reason they did it this way was because they wanted to give you all the view points about this and make you think for yourself and from all these different views you make your own answers.
I agree with the whole hidden in plain sight and this movie was a good example of it because a lot of the things in this movie had things hidden that people wouldn't normally think of or if they do they tend to ignore it, like the whole fixing of sumo wrestling and how some of the match's were fixed depending on the solution but many people ignore it because they didn't want to believe that they were fixed.

Chapters 4+5

Chapter 4

A inportant thing i find in this chapter was when it talk about becoming a francheisees it said "The franchisor wants to expand an existing company without spending its own funds. the franchiess wants to start his or her own business without going it alone and risking everything on a new idea" they pretty much go hand in hand because one is giving there brand name and a plan they want to do while the other is the one who adds the money to make it happen

Chapter 5

This chapter talks about french fries and it gives alot of infomations about it, one thing they said was how lets say you pay $1.50 for fries out of that money only 2 cents would go to the farmers who grew it. which shows again how these big companys just take advange of people not only there workers but people they buy from as well and at the end of it all it comes down to greedy companys trying to make the most profit out of there items.

HW 7 Reading Response

Fast Food Nation By Eric Schosser

chapter 1

The first chapter talks about a guy named Carl N. Karcher and how he was one of the first pioneer of fast food. It talks a little bit about Carls childhood how he lived on a farm. when he got older there was a hot dog stand for sell he ended up buying it and from there the chain started.

Chapter 2

This chapter talks about the food corporations targeting mostly kids and how they try to do different things to attract kids to there stores, One major image McDonald's put out was Ronald McDonald's making it more kid friendly to come to McDonald's.

I think what the corportaions were doing at this time was kind of messed up. Trying to brain wish the kids in a way to get them to go buy stuff from there company, and they were willing to do what ever it took for kids to always remember them/ always want something from them.

Chapter 3

This chapter talks about Mcdonlds and other companys in away abused there powers when it came to unions and how they were treating there workers. one quote that pretty much wraped it all up was "one of the most anti union companies on the planet" and it shows how they always want to do what ever there want and be in controll without having to worry about other people

HW 6

9/30
Today i went to subway to get something to eat i had a Meatball Marinara which said it was 560 calories which i guess in a way is not that bad but not that good either. when i ate the sandwich i felt pretty good reasons being was because it tasted good and also i didnt feel like i overate i felt just right, meaning i didnt eat to little or eat to much. Another reason that i didnt mind eating this sandwich was because cost wise it was not that bad it costed me about $6-7 bucks which was not that bad as well. what i notice about subway is that most of there sandwichs dont have that many calories depending on what you get on it/ ask for.

10/1
Today i had two slices of pizza the reason that i choose to have that was because i was pretty short on money that day and pizza was something cheep. when i tryed to look up the calories for the pizza it was about 200+ depending on what you get on it and where you buy it. I am going to take a guess that the pizza i ate was about 250 a slice reasons being was since it was cheep they tend to give you less and the crust was very thin which cuts off some calories. I also had some soda which was 150 calories i could have done without the soda because after drinking it i felt more full which which wasnt a good feeling.
